Tottenham moving to sign Willian wouldn’t be a surprise

Speaking on the latest episode of The View From The Lane (March 17), The Athletic’s Tottenham Hotspur correspondent has suggested that he wouldn’t be surprised to see the club make a move for Chelsea attacker Willian this summer.

What did he say?

Well, Eccleshare was asked by a Spurs fans which players he expects to be targeted and brought in during the next transfer window – whenever that may be – and the 31-year-old was the only name he mentioned.

The journalist said (29:43): “Yeah, this is a really hard one. I mean on the bringing in, we were talking before about Willian. You know, that feels like a possible one. That was something which was first written by our colleague Liam Twomey.

“I think, you know, the players to bring in will be the profile of either guys like Willian who are a bit older, are either at the end of their contracts or won’t be particularly expensive because of their age.”

No clues whatsoever: Which seasons do these iconic Spurs images belong to?

Could it happen?

It would certainly be no surprise, depending on what is to be decided with the rest of the 2019/20 campaign.

Firstly, Willian is out of contract at Stamford Bridge at the end of the season and has reportedly rejected a two-year offer as he wants an extra yeare and given he turns 32 years of age in August it appears in doubt whether he will get that.

The veteran forward showed exactly what he is capable of with his two-goal, match-winning display in his side’s 2-0 win at Tottenham in December, proving what he is still capable of at this level.

Given Willian previously said in 2018 that Mourinho is the best manager he’s ever worked with, this move makes so much sense.
