Bordeaux, who were once a powerhouse in Ligue 1, filed for bankruptcy in the summer. Their financial troubles came after a failed takeover attempt by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owners of Liverpool, which left the club in a dire situation. Placed in financial administration, Bordeaux were forced to release all of their players and rebuild from scratch, making room for new signings like Carroll.

Before joining Bordeaux, Carroll had been playing for Ligue 2 side Amiens. His move to the French fourth-tier club came as a surprise to many, but it was a critical decision for Bordeaux, who desperately needed experienced players to guide their resurgence. Sporting director John Williams played a key role in persuading Carroll to join the team on a free transfer, believing that the veteran striker could make a significant impact in their rebuilding phase. Caroll has openly admitted the move is "costing him money."
